September 2026 Newsletter

Hello All!

I hope the summer was enjoyable for everyone and you were able to take a little time away from the nursery to soak up the sunshine, hang with family and friends and do all the great things that summer has to offer.
Adam and I had a great summer hosting lots of family bbqs and pool parties, a trip to Canada in late July for our 15th anniversary, working in the garden has really brought me extra joy this year and a lot of time spent designing a new outbuilding with a new huge patio to accommodate the many summer parties we look forward to in the future.

Over the past winter while Adam and I were in Arizona, I was fantasying about this years vegetable garden and all the new varieties of tomatoes to grow, how I was going to set up an arch to train cucumbers on and laying out where to plant beans, corn, potatoes, watermelon and pumpkins. Well, I think I over did it!! We have been canning like crazy this summer starting with strawberries that were 2 weeks ahead of normal, cherries, peaches, salsas, peppers, pasta sauce, tomato jam, beans, pickles, whole tomatoes, pie fillings, and freeze drying almost everything that freeze dries well. I have my last 25 pounds of tomatoes to do tonight and the last of the corn to harvest and freeze dry then I’m done just in time for fall shipping. Never again will I plants so much of so many vegetables. Last winter I began putting sunflower seed in all my bird feeders… so this year we got hundreds of volunteer sunflowers everywhere, so pretty and heart warming!

Speaking of Fall shipping….attached are the September Availability and Fall Specials Lists. I know this has been a stressful and challenging year for everyone. so to help you guys I have put a lot of exciting plants on special so “seriously” take advantage of these low prices and stock up. Some of my favorites are the Skip Laurels in all sizes. The b&b ones will be freshly dug per order and are amazing, dark green and full. The container grown sizes are superb so be sure to put those on your fall order. The #1 Thuja Green Giants are good for shifting to a #5 or lining out in the field. The #5 Green Giants are also great for potting up or for retail sales. The 5-6’ Green Giant b&b are also amazing, full and at the top of their grade and priced to move so don’t linger. The Weeping Blue Atlas Cedars are a retailers dream. The #5’s are easily 5’+ with a nice caliper and the #7’s are even better, a definite addition to all fall orders. Now is the best time to upshift Pieris so take advantage of this screaming deal on our 1 gallons that are perfect for a 3 or 5 gallon pot.

Inventory this fall seems pretty strong. Currently we have a good supply of all Emerald Green Arbs even up to 8’. These are all beautiful full plants ready for immediate sales. We also have a good amount of Emerald Green Spirals and Poodles and the 5/6’ Spirals are on special. Our field grown and container grown Japanese Maples are fantastic. These were all fertilized in mid summer and the b&b ones will be freshly dug. Availability of most boxwoods seems to be reasonable but the larger uprights might be sold out by spring so let me know what you need for now or to prebook for spring 2027 delivery. Remember, the sale prices are only valid on Fall orders though.

There are certainly the usual shortages like Prunus Otto Luykens but now there are alternatives. We have available Prunus Napoleon and Chestnut Hill which are also low growing evergreen foundation plants. Daphnes are also short this fall but we will have some Eternal Fragrance, Odora Marginata and Marianni in 1 gallons available later in Spring 2027. If I’m able to locate any for Fall needs I will let you know.

A big THANK YOU to you for your continued support in Plants West. Our commitment to providing top quality Oregon grown plants with thoughtful pricing and personal service are our goals.

Now get your order pads (laptops) out and order your plants today!
